We have the light sorted, you know your exposures, that beautiful food is being laid in front of you and then you stare at it and think… What should I do now?
Don’t worry! Every food photographer has been there at some point in their career, some more than others but hey…
Learning to see is like learning to read, you have to train the eye and the brain to make it second nature. It’s a mix of instinct and experience and it’s a practice that you will have to update constantly and nurture for the rest of your life.
Seeing a scene is the first step to making a photograph. Hold your camera or phone low, at an angle or high up and look for the best angles to photograph the food presented in front of you.
Move things around in the background and foreground and tell the story of the dish as simple or as complex as you like depending on your style.
Look for leading lines, patterns, shadows, textures, flares… anything that catches your eye and makes the photo extra special, try to photograph the dish like it has never been seen before but STOP! don’t try to re-invent the wheel.
Train your eye by looking at stuff that interests you and grab it as inspiration, me for example, I like to look at fashion photography, design, architecture, and painting, my inspiration from light comes from baroque and renaissance painting.
